Day 8

Quick post as I need to get out the door to work.

Well I made it 7 days. Day 8 found me at JoAnn's buying binding for the 2 quilts I'm trying to get out this week to the tornado victims in Kansas. Couldn't find any pre-packaged stuff in the color I needed so I bought 1-1/2 yds of a nice rust solid that will be enough to bind both of them. I THINK 1-1/4 yds would have been enough but I'd rather have a little bit extra than not enough. I didn't quite make it out with just my binding fabric but I wasn't too bad. Got the fabric to back a UFO that I want to quilt next week and the thread to quilt another with. So I'm not counting these as cheats. I truly had nothing that would work for backing of my quilt and I did not have anything close to the proper shade of thread to quilt the other with. And I walked straight past the 99c FQs and didn't even slow down to look. I won't say I wasn't TEMPTED but I did resist. So a big WAHOO to me for that!

I'm not counting this as a cheat since these were necessary purchases of items needed to finish up 4 UFOs. All of which will be done in the next few weeks. And this is what I'm attempting to control my spending at. Just the purchases that I need to work with for the next week or so. My stash really isn't all that big anymore and I'd like to keep it that way. Besides my scraps (that I could use steadily for several years and not see the end of!) I really only have enough fabric to make maybe a dozen more co-ordinated quilts. And that's about how I want to keep it. That way I get to use new fresh fabrics for my more controlled fabric quilts and will have my scraps when I'm in an anything goes mood.

In addition to my Joann's purchases I went to Half-Price Books. It's in the same shopping center as Harbour Freight Tools where I was supposed to meet my sweetie after work. Since I get off earlier and he had to drive in from another town I had a little time to kill. I was good there too. Just bought 2 books both with little fun quilt projects that I think are the only thing I'm going to work on this summer besides finishing some of my UFOs. These will give me the opportunity to work with something fun and quick so I don't get bored with only working on UFOs. And at around $5 each they were cheaper than a couple magazines.

As we got home late (after 9) and I wanted to watch American Idol and House I didn't get any sewing done last night. Hopefully tonight will be more productive.

So that's how my day went. What about yours?

I'm "getting the idea" of a fabric diet from your words: I'm attempting to control my spending at. Just the purchases that I need to work with for the next week or so.

That I think I could "buy into" -- not necessarily restricting the buying, but buying what I'm actually going to use in the next short while rather than buying for the collection.... Its not as if the "perfect" fabric doesn't have several forms when its some future project. :-)

Being good takes such will power, doesn't it? Good for you! Those little summer projects sound like fun! I've got a couple of those little ones planned as well.

Be sure to watch Idol for me tonight. Ashley has her ring ceremony tonight (couldn't the school have planned this better???). Gonna try to tape it, but you know me and VCR's. Great job on you fabric diet.

I don't count things I need to buy to finish projects I'm currently working on against myself. Even with a good size stash, sometimes you don't have the right fabric needed for a binding or border. Glad to hear you're finishing some UFO's.

I think that if you buy fabric for a particular purpose, especially to back, bind or border a UFO, AND use the fabric right away, instead of putting it in the stash, it is okay to buy. You know it is going to good use. Good for you for sticking to the diet!

Hi Nancy, Thanks for the nice comments about my Bento Box quilt. I thought about putting my blocks in squares of 4, but decided not too. I very well may make another one and do that as I did like it when I arranged them that way. I did not see yours if you posted it, but I have just been on here since last June, so was it before that? I would love to see yours if you could tell me where to look. Thanks again, have a quilting memories kinda day!!!!

Hi Nancy, sounds like you are doing great!! keep up that good work...I know you can do it..*VBS*

Yes, quilts for Kansas, that whole tornado business is so very destressing. WI gets some, but nothing like Kansas and Missouri does.
I look forward to seeing your finished UFO's. Hugs, Finn

I think you are doing great on your fabric control. Your purchases were for finishing projects and your stash sounds like it's very managable. Thanks for the positive reinforcement.
