Well just as soon as I hit publish on the last post blogger decided to let the photo upload. So this is my little valentines quilt. I did this in an applique bee a few years ago at a LQS that has since closed. It's done from one of Elly S. (can't spell her name so I'm not going to even try!) books. 12 Ways to Applique or something like that. Being the overacheiver that I am I had to do 4 hearts from each of the 10 ways she showed to do them. I found that my favorite ways to do hand applique is to draw the shape on the piece being appliqued, baste the piece down, and cut the excess fabric away from the seam allowance just a few inches at a time, then to do needle turn applique. Unless it has really small pieces then I baste the seam allowance down before I applique. And I also liked reverse applique. I can see myself doing that again depending on the pattern being done.

The one square toward the bottom right with the white heart will get some sappy saying written in it. "My heart belongs to you" or something like that. This is for David and will hang in his office here at the house. Guess I should get busy so I can have it done before valentines day. I just lack the border and think I got stopped because I couldn't decide what to quilt in it. Might just do a cross hatch or something simple like that so I can get it done this week.

BTW, can you find the "maverick" block? A couple of the ladies in the group were real upset that I made that "mistake" and used the block. Especially since I made 40 blocks but only used 39 in the quilt. I just smiled and never did tell then that was a design feature and not a mistake. LOL!

Now I really do need to get back to work. :-)

Very nice! I think the maverick is the red background one, yes?

I can't see one that isn't "right"... will you use the 40th heart as a label on the back?

Silly ladies. Why would they think you made that one accidentally? Like it is any of their business which blocks you use in YOUR quilt. I like it!

Every quilt needs at least one maverick block. I took a scrap class years ago the one time I got to go to the Houston Quilt Festival from Darra Duffy Williamson. She wrote the second book on scrap quilts that I found. This was in 1992,I think. Anyway, she taught us to make 25% of the blocks maverick in some way. Sure makes the quilt more interesting!

one block the heart looks like it has feet...could that be the one?? It is a great wall hanging..and how sweet to write on the white heart- clever girl !

I found it! The blue heart on the red background. I like it but I probably wouldn't have picked up on it if you hadn't said there was a maverick block.

I love the quilt but not sure I would have tried all the methods myself. My favorite method of applique is fused and then blanket stitched by hand.

Wow, a UFO from a few years ago about to become complete! Sometimes the silliest things keep me from finishing a UFO - one time I ran out of red thread and it took me 2 years to buy that thread - I only had a few more blocks to quilt!!!

My favorite method of applique - sew the piece right side down onto a piece of super light interfacing. Slit the interfacing and turn right side out. Press. Trim out the interfacing. Use machine blanket stitch with thick black thread to applique. OK, so I'm lazy!!! I admire your willingness to try so many different ways to HAND applique!

Your quilt really came out great.

Cheers!

I think that blue heart just makes the quilt smile like it has a secret..*VBS* Poor ladies who don't know about design features...LOL. Good for you Nancy!!

Let's see - maverick block is the blue heart on a red background & is very clever! My idea on quilting - chain of hearts....

I am seeing a lot of heart quilts & I still want to make a scrappy reds & white/cream/tan/taupe (probably)one for myself....With that said, my Baltimore Album has a heart theme.... But that is a languishing UFO!
