Day 7

Yesterday was total bust quilting wise. I came home, fixed/ate supper, sat in my recliner to read email and a few blogs and fell asleep. Woke up around 10 just in time to go to bed. LOL! And tonight won't be any more productive as David is meeting me in town after work for a little shopping and supper (didn't go Sunday after all) so I won't be home until late.

I have plans to make a purchase tonight that does violate my personal "no quilt related purchases in August" challenge. I've wanted a design wall for years but in my tiny sewing room just haven't been able to find a big enough wall space. I got to looking this weekend and if I remove the shelf holding my boxes of small pieces (6" to FQ size) and keep the treadmill folded up when not in use (which is like NEVER!) then I have a section of wall 6-7' across by 7' high. Not ideal but since I make very few quilts that are bigger than this without the borders it will certainly be better than grubbing around on the floor to lay out blocks. So I'm off to buy foam-core board tonight while I'm thinking of it and we'll be at Lowe's anyway in the truck. Not technically quilt related, but when you add batting (which I do have on hand) it becomes a quilt tool which was specifically listed in my list of no-no's for this month. Oh well, like I said before, it's my PERSONAL challenge so I can change the rules as I see fit. LOL!

The good news is I can remove that section of shelving because with all my stash purge earlier and the digging around and re-organizing lately I have one whole cabinet almost empty. So the small pieces can now live in there.

In response to some of the comments I've received lately. No I don't think the COLORS in the fabrics I'm using for the Fons and Porter Contest are boring. What I meant by boring was basicaly all Moda Marbles without much texture in the print. They're great - don't get me wrong - but when that's all you use it's kinda , well boring. I like a lot of texture in my TOT's. Like in the group I show in my post from July 30th. But with 3" blocks the larger "prints" in the TOTs would be distracting.

And for those who want me to adopt them keep in mind that I played as big a trick on my sister by sending these to her as she is on me by making me work with 30s. Cause I don't care for 30s and she doesn't care for brights. And to say she's NOT a cat lover is putting it mildly (hard to believe she's my sister, huh?). So I'm also inflicting a little bit of cat fabric on her. **insert very evil grin here** LOL!

My sister and I also have VERY different styles. One year we made her make a scrap quilt for a family challenge and then the next year she made me make a 3 color quilt with applique - ugh!

Funny thing is I liked the quilt when I was done and luckily we didn't exchange them that time like we usually do - everyone kept their own.

I'll have you know there is 30's CAT fabric winging it's way to you as we speak! I will have to be sure to use it in the next block I cut out, just to prove I can sew on cats.

Can't wait to get your brights and cut into them. You know 10 years ago these colors would have been the ones to draw my eye first. Maybe they will speak to me again. Then again, they may make me hurry up the stairs to the stack of browns and black accumulating on my shelf :-)

Absolutely change these rules - having a design wall will make it so much easier to make stash quilts! One sort-of quilt related purchase to help you stick with the challenge as a whole - works for me!

Terrific that you know have the space for a design wall because you MADE the room by using, flinging etc to make it happen.

Nancy, I'm going to comment all in this post! WOW, you have been busy. I like the brights, but I can see what you mean.

Hey, my wall is about 7 feet by 7 feet and it's a perfect size for working up a nice quilt.

You have a lucky sister, she will enjoy EQ5 a lot!!

Putting up a design wall is like remodeling. I don't think you broke any rules by Remodeling! Enjoy your new wall.

A design wall is a necessity. My design wall is the best thing I ever did. Though, it is an old vinyl table cloth hanging wrong side out. Let me know how yours turns out. Maybe I should try and do it the right way... lol!

Thanks for the suggestion on the white border. I decided to keep it. And it looks good! All done with that and ready to tackle something else tomorrow. Though, I have no idea what.

breaking the rules by putting up a design wall? no way--it's a necessity! As a matter of fact, it's a very well deserved thing--look at all the cleaning/organizing/purging you had to do to get that space. You go girl! I'm thinking I'm going to need to buy teflon cloth to recover my ironing board--it's about shot! I guess I could wait until Sept., but I don't count utilitarian fabric like that as fabric!

I completely understood what you meant & agreed on both points! (I also agree with & support the sisterly torture! So when can I move back home?)

That design wall sounds like a necessity to me not just something for pleasure! LOL You've been very productive - I love those bright marbles and such!

that design wall does sound wonderful - it is definately something I need to add to my space - I am still trying to make a little 36x45 piece of flannel work and it really does not work - my sister and I are quite different too - but that makes it so much more fun to get together

Lucky you now being able to have a design wall. I know in my small sewing room i'll never have room for a design wall that's why i always have to use the living room floor.
